I believe part of the reason for the separate reservoir is to have added protection and a second path for the oil in case the hose pops out of the case drain coupler.
On Deere 8000 series tractors, you will be the first to know if the motor is dumping too much oil back to case as it will starve the clean oil reservoir.
Part of the reason you had some flow into the reservoir is that you had the motor drain connected to "return" which contains 200 - 300 psi back pressure. Case drain has no back pressure.
