Poultry.
Our kids have every kind you could imagine at one time or another. Send them out twice a day to do chores and not worry about anything getting them down. They bring in eggs and feel lots of pride when they contribute to the family or maybe sell some.
Butcher some yourself and they learn where food comes from. Show some at the fair if you want.
