Southwest OK | I took these pictures a couple of weeks ago, and thought they might be appropriate after the discussion in the grass cattle thread. I am by no means saying that horses are the only good tool, the same techniques work on scooters, quads, foot, vehicle, or even a bicycle.
The reason I gathered these was to sort off 76 that were part of a different program.
I do occasionally call cattle into pens, but it tends to create a competitive attitude in the cattle so they are much more likely to bump into someone in the pens with them.
256 head of mixed steers and heifers, they hadn't seen a horse since I stopped treating sickness in November. When I received them in October, they chased the driver off the truck. They weren't just wild, they were mean.
I gathered them by myself on a three year old colt and never moved faster than a long trot. From the pens to the back side is a little over a mile. I took the first picture at 1:55, the last at 3:24.
These pens are very well built, but not well designed so cattle don't really like going into them. Pictures 7 and 8 show the cattle balking at the gate. I moved the entire herd up the fence so that I could handle just the lead animals.
