I didn't even know they could kill themselves by overeating colostrum. I spiked a 2 week old bottle calf on a cow recently without ever even catching the cow. He was blasting lots of yellow pudding out is butt for a couple of days, but it didn't seem to slow him down any. I would suspect that calf just didn't get enough colostrum at the start. That's the way I tend to lose them after several days of intensive care (and wasted time and money) later.
