Best SCV to use for the return is the left/#1. Could put the power beyond block on it or just return into the port on the side. I have been told that SCV and only that one returns to the charge pump/filter circuit. This maximizes oil flow through the cooler up front.
If you aren't returning through the regular SCV couplers, there should be no need to have a check valve on the return line.
