I wish I could tell you what caused it. That area is right at the growth point. Hopefully no permanent damage. At this point I would focus on nutrition and energy to the calf. Keep it in a warm dry environment. May give 1 cc of banamine for pain but not more than a couple of treatments. The hoof grows like our nail so you have a chance to have success.
