Generally I agree with testing a bull each year. But if the testing was going to cost me 2 bulls as in DI's post it would make me try to come up with a different way of doing things. I've had bse's done but sure don't look forward to doing that each year. I try to have a spare bull each year but one in with a group at a time. Two bulls in with a group at the same time seem to spend more time worrying about each other than breeding cows. In my rotational grazing system and small herd I watch the cows especially closely after bull in day. I sure don't want to see a cow in heat unless that bull is following her, especially after one cycle. If I see cows in heat it's time to bring in the reserves. This has only happened once but because of a bull's hoof injury. Not saying this is for everyone, just one way of many in a small herd.
