Subject: RE: Corn population poll

Different weather year to year will confuse results by changing the population by the year. The only way to be sure is side by side population tests the same year on a field that has the same soil types distributed the same for the test plots.

The population needed depends on the available nutrition and the corn breeding. In 2007 I found a hybrid supposedly efficient on its use of N and the DSM suggested 34K population and I gave it only 111 pounds of N from 100 pounds of MAP, and 100 pounds of N in 32% with a split application. Harvested 173.2 dry bushels corn that fall. Because my planter dropped an extra seed every 15 feet I ran out of that seed and dug up a part of a sack of another brand and treated it the same, the got some 1 year old seed from a neigbor. The first two varieties had full ears, the third variety tipped back to pop can ears. Custome combiner didn't have a working yield monitor so I wasn't able to compare parts of the field and the different corns.
