Those three pegs are the pistons that extend to open and close the sheave. Thats the heart of the system. You can pull them out of the hole. On them there is a high temp O-ring. At this point replacing them wouldn't be a bad idea. On some there is a plug on the shaft and the shaft is ported into the splines
