I agree that it's very easy to install them backwards.

I used to apply air pressure to them with an air compressor before I put them back on the planter to make sure they were working right.

There is a lot to do to make them work right and it's no fun to have to pull shafts when you would rather be planting. Good luck.


You are wise in that you are going through your clutches as this time. I agree with the others that it is very easy to reassemble them incorrectly. I used to leave one partially disassembled on the bench so that I could use it as a reference when doing the others. I never replaced any parts in mine but always did find dirt in some of them.

In my case, I had a Deere 1760 with ProDrive so the clutches were mounted on the units. That meant that I didn't need to pull any shafts as each clutch could be removed quite easily.
