Subject: RE: Kinze center pivot bearing

Missouri
I don't see many 3400's (only one in my area that I can think of), so I haven't had a good look at that pivot mechanism.

By the parts book, it appears to use the same bearing and bearing block as a 3600 (of which there are many hundreds of in my area and I see them all day long).

If it works the same as the 3600, I'd say if you find the zerk and pump it until grease comes out, there's no need for any further maintenance concern of the bearing. It is massive, only turns 1/4 of a revolution in a planter fold/unfold cycle, at a speed about 0.25 RPM. I can't imagine circumstances under which that bearing would need anything.

The casting containing the bearing races, on the other hand, is worth taking a good look at. Inspect it for cracks. It will be held to the frame by 8 large bolts. Check that for loose/broken bolts. If the casting shows no cracks, the bolts are all present and tight, and the bearing has grease, then all maintenance concerns in that area have been satisfied.
