Northwest Iowa | Fundamentally, winter weather directly affects April fat cattle. Tougher conditions will slow gains making it harder to get anticipated weight gain. When brokering, I would advise to use puts for marketing in the April since futures hedges can get away from you. June cattle are normally discounted as those fats that did not do as well through the winter will get marketed against the June. An older cattle feeder once told me that with the June numbers are generally higher as well since you have the tail end of the yearlings and the front end of the calves all punching up. Simplified statement is that June cattle are made to be sold! Very similar to Dec hogs. April fat cattle and June hogs- use restraint or options when marketing in those months. | |
