For the situation you are asking about I'd say it's not worth it being only 5% of a field. We have some rolling ground with lighter hills and heavy black bottoms. It's closer to 50/50 not a small percentage of the field. Started using precision paks from croplan which is a blend of two different beans. One is more "defensive" and one is more "offensive" so the defensive does better on the stressed areas and vise versa. The beans may not be the same maturity but because it's a blend the field matures evenly. For instance their 3300s are a 3.2 and a 3.4 blend. I think they work extremely well for variable fields. Obviously if a whole field is one soil type this isn't a bean you'd want.
