Juneau, WI
We did that exact placement based on Rawsons advice with his coulters and had reduced stands and stunted corn for two years and we were only applying a total of 25 gallons of 28%. Put same amount on one side with same placement and our plant health and stands came back. We have applied as much as 50 gallons on one side 4 inches away in the past without seeing issues. If the coulters with spring tines would maintain fertilizer at a 4 inch depth to achieve 2 X 2 placement results may be different. I would say we were usually getting liquid 2 inches deep and were wearing a lot of tines and tips out to do so. We came to the conclusion that we were still burning roots with all fertilizer on one side of the row, but the corn could grow away until the fertilizer became less harsh. When we applied the fertilizer on both sides of the row the corn was trapped. Obviously different soil types will respond differently but we do not have that much sandy in our soil. Most of our CEC's range from 12 to 25. I am sure that using different fertilizers or lower rates at deeper depths will change how dual placement will respond in comparison. A healthy dose of 10-34-0 on both sides might work great. Be careful with UAN.
