Prepping the tank isn't any more difficult than painting the cab. They're both aluminum. Wash down the aluminum tank with acid if you wish, give it a quick sanding with some 220 grit paper and spray it with primer surfacer. Spray a few more times and leave it dry. Sand it all smooth with 320 paper....work your way to 400 paper, and give it a coat of one step urethane. You can top coat it with clear coat....or you can actually mix the clear with the urethane. If you're real anal about the surface...you might sand with 600 paper...but 400 is usually sufficient.
