mn | My house has beautiful hardwood under the carpet. Word of warning though, unless your house has had updated insulation since it was built, be prepared to wear shoes or slippers in the winter with hardwood floors. It's like standing on cold cement if you have 1930s insulation.
Wife got one of those robot vacuums that runs everyday. That pretty much takes care of the old farmhouse and carpet combination issues.
