Southeast WI
When we get the luxury of having a 40 or 80 acre field I typically break them into 2.4 acre grids and sample each one in a W pattern, paying attention to soil types in each one so I don't mix odd areas. I will point sample some fields where soil types vary widely so I guess I've adopted a smart soil sampling scheme. One size does not fit all by any means. One thing holds true - when in doubt make sample sizes smaller to find problems. 5 acre grids or sample size here is bad for many soils. Just not fine enough scale.
