Kingston,Mi | I was in college at Michigan State University at that time and we had small, low powered AM radio stations that essentially broadcast over the dorms electrical system. Each little station had their want-to-be disc jockeys who would announce that if you wanted some specific cut played just dial x-xxxx and they would see if they could round it up for play. We were bored and lonely (I lived in West Shaw Hall, home of the animals, it was a massive dorm that held when fully stocked about 4000 lonely and rejected by all civilized women; engineers, math geniuses and farm kids. Shaw Halls East and West were built on the farm or animal side of the Red Cedar River in the early 50's to house Korean war GI bill students, hence the nickname, Shaw Hall Animals) . We would dial up the first 4 numbers of Radio Shaw and when the dj cut in on the tail of the song to ask for requests, half the dorm tried to dial the last digit. Some animal always got thru and requested "Alice's Restaurant, the long version". If the dj hung up and took the next call, the request was the same. After several request's for the same song he would spin it, 18 minutes later, the whole farce started over again until the entire campus was ready to march on Shaw and commit some sort of mayhem that the animals had not yet thought of. | |

Just a Thanksgiving reminder that...
