I have had good success with Proctor-Silex. Cheap, but (mostly) American - made. Only wish slots were longer, although it probably does not matter as I have had to cut out wheat.
Somw years back, I had occasion to visit a Williams-Sonoma kitchen store. They had a $400 two slice tooter from europe. I did not bring it home
