We have spots on some farms where they pushed dirt years ago to either make it flat enough to gravity irrigate, or just to make it easier to farm. These spots usually only amount to 2-5 acres per farm, and usually each individual spot is anywhere from the size of a pickup to maybe an acre. In our area, they're common and known as "mag spots". If you pick the right hybrid, they might make 150 bu/a on a 250 bu/a farm. If you don't pick the right hybrid, they will fill with weeds and not even put on an ear. The corn in these spots is yellow and stunted all through its life. These spots are small enough we can justify spending some money on them, per acre, especially with the precision abilities we have today. So what does it need to start building organic matter and going in the right direction? Manure? Gypsum? Humic Acid? Manure is not too available in our area. Would love to hear all ideas, though. Could be applied with dry floater, sprayer, strip till machine, planter, or sidedress machine. So what does it need, and when?
