I would dig up the radish to see if they had turned at any point that will tell you where your compaction layer is at. Radish will protrude from the ground but they should not protrude as much as your picture is showing. A suggestion we have found out from 10 years of cover crops is 5# of radish is to much and very expensive in our area that would cost $17/acre. I would do 2 lbs. of radish and 3 lbs. of rapeseed $9/acre. Rapeseed are similar to radish but they have a smaller tap root and they have roots that protrude off the side that help break surface compaction and allow that radish drive deeper in the soil.
