Subject: RE: 9870 engine Fan bearing fail

SW Minnesota
You certain the bearing failed and it wasnt the shaft? This is a common problem on a run of 70 series. Don't know the serial break, but last fall we had 200 acres of corn left and the fan let loose. Called our service manager and told him I had one he probably doesn't see that often. He then asked me if it got the shroud too, and was impressed it didnt. Radiator and cooler destroyed. He had seen it, said deere had a bad set of shafts. Couldn't get radiator as all other dealers in the nation were holding there's until harvest was completed. I believe it was around 6 grand, but we had bought warranty when we bought the combine used and he got it covered (got lucky in that regard because the warranty ran out after that.) This is under deeres fix as fail program, most likely to get machines out of warranty so they don't have to pay the bill on them all.
