It varies so much you must not rely on things like milk line and black layer for moisture. Need to shred some stalks representative of the field.

I think this is one reason for the popularity of kernel processers. Lots of varieties will have too much moisture at black layer for some types of storage, so the ability to process the grain to help maintain its digestibility is very important when you are waiting on one of those types to drop moisture enough to ensile properly without excessive seepage.
