I'm facing the same thing on a 1680. In talking with my local dealer's mechanic my understanding is it goes out the bottom. He mentioned it gets miserable if the bolts on the bottom plate are rusted up badly. Also mentioned it's sometimes necessary to remove the left drive wheel.
I hope others reply that have had experience with replacing both the upright and the horizontal flighting as well.
