Subject: Dekalb

South Dakota
I've always been a huge fan of Dekalb/Asgrow. Up until last year we had been 100% dekalb for 15-20 years. Because of price we planted about 50% Dk/asgrow last year and 50% various others. I got quotes from pioneer, golden harvest, and curry yesterday and on corn dekalb isn't even in the ball park. Dk averages $35-$55/acre more expensive. That's insane. No wonder dekalb is struggling for market share in southern South Dakota. I have faith in monsanto's product, but pioneer and syngenta are competitive on yield, I can't justify spending that much more. Actually, I'm kind of angry that dekalb would try to charge that much more than their closest competitor.

Edit to add that's $100-$120 cheaper per bag than we averaged on our dekalb price last year. I think this year if we pushed, I think we could get dk within $50-75 of pioneer and others, but I don't think it's worth it.
