Central Arkansas | Thirty years ago we tried tensiometers, but they had me irrigating when the topsoil was moist--too much for me. If I can make a ball of soil, and it doesn't break apart, we wait awhile. If the dirt just crumbles and won't stick, we start pumping. Years ago, at farm meetings, we were told that "Farmers wait too long to start irrigating, and they quit too soon." This winter, many farm publications are claiming that farmers irrigate more than necessary. If I thought probes would have me irrigating less, and wouldn't take too much time--then I would be all for them. | |
