NE Iowa | If you are drilling after beans in Iowa you don't have enough frost free days to do anything but winter rye. In my experience it doesn't hurt corn yields if you plant on time and have enough N available upfront. Use 1 bu/acre of whatever variety of winter rye you can buy the cheapest. I use mostly "variety not stated". You won't get enough growth to use ryegrass or turnips in the fall. The advantage of winter rye as it starts growing quickest in the spring. If it is an early warm spring then you can bale the rye before planting if you want. | |
