Subject: Central Iowa corn pics

Central Iowa
There's been lots of mentions of the 163 corridor in Iowa. This is 2 different varieties within 10 miles of Pella that I think really shows the difference in ear size between hybrids. The first 2 pics are Dekalb 61-55 and the second two are Wyffels 7886. You will notice that the 61-55 is shorter but ear weights and kernel counts are very similar. I would suspect the 61-55 will act very similar to DK 62-98 in that it "hides" yield even though the ears don't look like anything special. The 7886 looks like it's going to be a real monster, large ear size with typically very good ear weight. Looking forward to harvest and I will report back on these 2 fields.
I think one big unknown yet is kernel weight. Both these fields are starting to transition to maturation but the fields have had zero moisture or nitrogen stress. The stalk is turning but even at this stage of development there is almost zero leaf firing. It looks like we have a chance for extended fill with cooler temps like last year, where we had lots of corn in that 75K kernel count/bushel and some with 70K. If this is the case again I believe this area will rival 2004 for an all time record yield. I feel for those who have poor crops we just happened to have almost ideal conditions in our little area all year. FWIW average ear counts are 33.5K and kernel counts are 16X36 so you can do the math.
