This field was no-tilled planted 5/13. The previous crop was spring wheat. We planted rye last fall into the wheat stubble intending to harvest it for grain this year, But the rye died out in some patches this spring, the only thing we can think of that caused this was winter kill. Here are some pictures that i took at the begining of the season and on 8/15.
 The ear that i checked had 16 rows with 41 kernels/row. The second to last picture shows the soil sample that i balled up with my hand, it was like this from the soil surface down to at least 48 inches. The last picture shows the road next to the corn field, it gives you a idea of the lay of the land. This is located on the extreme east edge of the James River valley, so its all down hill from there. In fact if go back about a quarter of mile is where the high point is. When dad had 1950 vintage trucks, that didn't have power steering and power brakes, we could shut the engine off and coast down to where the trees are in the far end of the picture, where grandpa's place was.
