Columbus, TX | I have a pretty small operation and am still learning a lot.
I just got an offer to lease some more ground right down the road to where I'm currently at now, and another place not too far away either.
This is sandy ground. Very light.
The rent is darn cheap, so I'd like to give something a try.
Most of the ground farmed around me is rice, which is another reason I'd like to give this ground a shot, the landowner is talking about possibly putting a well in (it's drilled already, needs motor and pump) then it's a no brainer to plant rice.
But for now, I'm just wondering what to plant.
The ground has been laid out for a long time, probably at least 10 years, probably closer to 15.
There are some cattle on it now, and it's mainly grass, some weeds of course, but mainly grass.
Haven't tested soil just yet, but plan to here pretty quick.
Milo and sesame have crossed my mind quite a bit, have also thought of soybeans then maybe milo the next year.
Some ground has slight slopes, so that would be planted flat, other parts that are flat ground will be put up in beds.
Planting on 36" rows
What are yall's thoughts for growing crops in sand?
Anybody have any luck?
I'm in southeast Texas
Thanks
