NW TX Panhandle | Genetics & environment. Some Corn genetics are prone to tip back (abort kernel fill) if environmental conditions are not favorable during the grain fill period. Temperature, available moisture, leaf loss, compaction, nutrient availability or any other limiting factor, can all cause an ear to tip back in filling the end kernels. The more adverse the environmental factor, the more kernels that are lost on the ends of the ears. Some genetics are going to tip back somewhat regardless of any adverse environmental factors. If this particular type hybrid doesn't tip back some, it's said to be planted too thin. Just my .02 | |
