Western-Central Lower Michigan
HD or Lowes has a whole house Charcoal filter system you can put on in the basement. I run one and change out the filter about once every two months.
GAC, stands for granulated activated charcoal. Google that and find lots of hits. The filters are cheapest to buy online. The housing's are std, so it wont matter where you get filters.
You wont be needing to buy bottled water if you use a GAC. By the way, all bottled water is is well water from a good aquifer.
If you have a high use house they come in an even bigger filter, with 1" in/out. The filter I use has 3/4" fittings. Be sure to put a couple of ball valves above/below filter to make changing easy and fast.
