Subject: RE: Google acct.

Your spreadsheets are probably gone for good indeed.
Let it be a reminder for not letting in third parties as intermediates between you and Google: Your Google (or other cloud) account is your own for you to control, not for an Internet provider you change every now and then, or gets bought by a bigger fish, or bankrupts, etc. Google already makes enough annoying changes into its products, like giving up on Google Reader, bundles, YouTube RSS feeds, etc., that you don't need to add to that the problems caused by third parties.

I don't recommend storing all files on the Cloud exclusively anyway: Use the Google Drive or Microsoft OneDrive software, and store your spreadsheets in these Drive folders on your computer, and always open the spreadsheets on your local folder. This way you keep a local copy that remains accessible even online, or from a smart phone, and any changes on the spreadsheets get automatically replicated over the second copy in the Cloud. If these files are not critical, a local copy and a Cloud copy are enough security. For all other important personal and system files, you need a third copy, like an external backup drive, or rather several other "third" copies, snapped at different times, so you can restore an old one if you didn't notice the file got corrupted before several backups went on.
