You might look at a mix of cool season legumes like Harry vetch as well as the winter peas incase one doesn't have a good year you've got some of the other.

Also don't over graze the cover as if the cattle graze it too hard they'll kill it out.

I would NOT reduce any fertilizer rates until you were a few years into cover cropping.

The residue of the legumes like peas and vetch have a narrow C:N ratio so the residue won't stay as lot as cOrn stalks or cereal rye.

As for suppressing pigweed......good luck as it germs for such a long period it's hard to get anything to work all season long weather it be cover or herbicide.

The pp fields that had red clover established in them last year have very few pigweeds in them in August and have not been sprayed all year....
