Subject: Grower plot update (and bunch of pics)

McLeod County, MN

It has been ten day so it was time to get out and scout again.  These sample came from the middle of the field where I haven't spent a ton of time yet.  I would call it average to slightly above portion of the field.

1. Some western corn rootworm beetles showed up. Saw about 5 from being in the field most of the day.
2. These hybrids with the root lodging had poor brace roots when they got hit.
3. The lodging clearly injured some of these plants as they are not throwing a "full" ear.
4. The stronger the stalk the more green snap. The ones that could lean a little did not snap near as bad.
5. Exciting variation in kernel size, cob size, kernel depth.
6. Ground was wet when I was out there today. About 1/3 on Thurs and half inch yesterday. ALMOST THERE!!

Once again this is my mileage, yours may differ greatly. Random order as always.

Early Test

Renk 522ss- Very minor root lodge (less than 1%), Some greensnap, short/fat ear type, not much husk cover w/ shorter shanks, very nice stalks with little stress showing on leaves.

Titan Pro 58-95ss- Noticeable large ears, moderate husk cover on cobs with medium length shanks, Thinner stalks than most with maybe average strength. Green snap and root lodging not an issue

Dekalb 45-65ss- No rootlodge, very few green snaps. Very bulky ears and a cob with a short shank. Good stalks and showing little signs of stress on leaves. More ear flex from girth than length.

Croplan 3611ss- Some minor root lodging, but no green snap. Long and bulky ears with medium length shanks. Moderate husk cover with decent stalk strength

LG 5415ss- Very large kernels. No greensnap or root lodging. Very nice looking corn with shorter bulky ears and moderate shanks. Good stalks

Golden Harvest 95d32- Some root lodge and some green snap. Stalks are strong and ears are big. Fair amount of husk cover and medium length shanks. Some root lodge corn has smaller ears.

Wensman 90962ss- What fat ears you have! Oh my, the ears on this thing are bulky. I noticed robust brace roots, short shanks, consistent, strong stalks with some green snap thrown in.

Stalk strength (Highest to lowest)
Wensman, Renk, Dekalb, Golden Harvest, LG, Croplan, Titan Pro

Greensnap (Most to least)
Renk, Wensman, Golden Harvest, DK, Croplan, LG, Titan Pro

Maturity (Farthest ahead to least)- not much separating them at all
LG, Renk, Wensman, DK, Golden Harvest, Croplan, Titan Pro

Middle Test

Titan Pro 39-98ss- Shorter bulky ears with short shanks and very strong/thick stalks. Very uniform with some green snap, but no root lodging. Ears definitely made to flex bulk over length. Large kernels.

Renk 596ss- Late bloomer! It looks really good compared to early season. No greensnap or root lodging. Good stalks with upright leaves, light husk cover, short shanks, and bulky ears.

Pioneer 9929 amxt- Minor greensnap and minor root lodging. Noticeable variation in ear height, with long shanks. Kernels counts are not impressive, but they are very large, and very deep. Stalks are good and showing no signs of any deficiency. This hybrid is far along for its maturity.

Wensman 90994ss- Have picked up some greensnap and root lodging in this hybrid. It has good stalks and long ears with medium length shanks. It looks like this ear could flex length and girth.

Dekalb 49-72ss- No root lodging, and minor green snap. These plants have strong stalks and are racing to maturity. Very consistent ears with short shanks and average kernel size.

Peterson 81w95ss- Fat ears on short shanks with strong stalks. Not much husk cover and very apparent they will fill to the tip. Minor greensnap and root lodge. Not much sign of stress on plant leaves.

LG 5460ss- Almost no Green snap or root lodging. Long ears with long shanks that seem to be filling all the way. Stalks are no its strength, but it looks like one of the more appealing hybrids in this plot.

Stalk strength (Highest to lowest)
DK, Titan Pro, Peterson, Wensman, Renk, Pioneer, LG

Greensnap (Most to least)
Titan Pro, Wensman, Pioneer, Peterson, DK, LG, Renk

Maturity (farthest to least)
Pioneer, Peterson, Dekalb, Titan Pro, LG, Renk, Wensman

Late Test

Wensman 9325ss- This one has picked up some GS and RL. Seems to have slowed in growth. Gonna take a long time to grain fill. This plants have moderate stalks with big kernels on small/ low-hanging cobs and short shanks.

Gold Country 102-88ss- These plants have strong stalks and roots. Some greensnap has occurred. These ears are long and bulky with little husk cover and short shanks.

Golden Harvest G01P52- This hybrid has some root lodging issues. Root lodged plants are not throwing a full-sized ear. Stalk strength is average. Ears are cover by lots of husk and have long shanks. Kernel counts around are not impressive, but the kernel size definitely is.

Dekalb 52-84ss- These plants have strong stalks with some greensnap and no root lodging. Ears are quite long and appear to be flexing for the lower stand count. Short plant, short shanks.

Pioneer 0157 amx- This hybrid was beat up by an untimely wind for its development. It has recovered quite respectably. Some of the tops that snapped and were broken have healed to the point where its at least throwing somewhat of an ear. It is a late maturing hybrid with low kernel counts, but very large/deep kernels. Some of its early root lodged plants have pulled themselves back up. Stalks are good and it shows little signs of stress.

Titan Pro 53-03 2p Vt2- This hyrbid has minor green snap, but noticeable root lodging. It is kind of inconsistent because of the root lodging. It is also late developing

Croplan 4099ss- These plants have minor green snap and root lodging. Stalks are very good. Ears are long and bulky with medium length shanks.

Stalk Strength (highest to lowest)
Gold Country, Dekalb, Croplan, Wensman, Golden Harvest, Pioneer, Titan Pro

Greensnap (most to least)
Pioneer, Gold Country, Wensman, Dekalb, Golden Harvest, Croplan, Titan Pro

Maturity(farthest to least)
DK, Croplan, Gold Country, Golden Harvest, Wensman, Pioneer, Titan Pro
