Subject: RE: notill beans question?

The few no-till soybean fields around here have started to perk up in the last few days, in general all beans tilled or not look waterlogged in heavy soils and can see tile lines especially in corn. . Fields with lighter soil and excessive drainage (hills), look the best. Just checked a no-till soybean field in cornstalks and noticed a sandy corner looks great, rest of the field is pale with any bare spots in residue often having better nodulation and looking greener, eventually all those green spots come together as season moves on. Your biggest challenge will be keeping the faith and no-tilling again next year. May seem counter intuitive but it is an easier transition to notill corn into soybean stubble followed by notill beans into cornstalks as you go long term no-till. As soil biology gets going and worms are doing more tillage for you it gets easier. As far as adding N that is a great question, have not tried that to help transition to no-till. We also run 30" rows, I think 22" would help fill rows quicker while still giving some clearence for residue flow, used 15" in past, white mold was an issue then.
