Columbia Basin, Ephrata, WA | Pretty sorry electricians, IMO. Any electrician that isn't sure enough of his skills to work on 480v systems isn't skilled enough to work on any electric systems.
As for the OP, he has an application that requires 480. This isn't a post about what voltage he should use. I fail to see how his electric company thinks it's safer to supply him with 240 that has to be stepped up to 480. Easier, cheaper, and safer to just get 480 right from the transformers on the poles, and skip the extra components.
The oversized transformer would work fine, but I'd be pressing the electric provider for a better explanation about why they can't just provide 480 in the first place.
