Take the hard drive out and plug it as a second drive in another computer, so you can run diagnostic utilities on it and see if you can read it, maybe create a system image to clone it. At least you'll know if the problem is with the hard drive (most likely) or with the laptop.

Consider buying a SSD drive instead of a hard drive, no spinning platters and head or any mechanical component to break...
Check with Dell for your options regarding the Windows replacement, they should be able to help even if it's past the warranty.
