They are all earthquakes. Aftershocks are related to the "main event". When a big fault line moves, all of the little ones around it have to adjust. They can be all over the scale and at various depths. Growing up on the coast, we had tsunami and earthquake drills. Always were warned about aftershocks following the big one. USGS has some good info too.
