Our first tiling machine was a Vermeer pt12. We powered it with a 3010 Deere. The 3010 was even way to much power for it. It was a slow tedious process with the pt12 but we put in a lot of tile with it. We had many breakdowns especially with the dogs on the wrench system. The pt12 was one of the first machines Mr. Vermeer ever designed and built. Our 12 was almost as old as the soil it was trenching.
Your pt18 looks great, much heavier and better designed than the model 12. I can see why you would enjoy running it. Running a trencher like that really gives you a feel for the ground you are tiling. Always a adventure, you never know what you will find or see.
If anyone has the urge to do it the real old fashion way there are a couple of pt12's for sale, here are the ads

The one on Tractorhouse was probable built right after WWII. Ours was like the one on Auctiontime.

No, the old fashioned way is with the Buckeye 301. We have one but the tracks are about shot.
