If you run Thompson's it is 100% mandatory that you run Keeton seed firmers.
Also I don't think it would be a good idea to run 1 Thompson and wedge with a regular wheel on the other side. That would put a side load on your closing wheel bracket and probably lead to premature wear on the bushings.
-- I think anytime you run different whls on either side of the same bracket (regardless of wheel brand or design), you're going to have side load and extra wear on the bushings.
Another thing to keep in mind is that you really want both sidewalls broken up so roots can grow in all directions. Running only a single spoked closing wheel per row is doing only half the job. If you're wanting to limit your investment, my suggestion is to set up half the planter with 2 spoked closing whls per row (preferably Thompsons with wedges), and leave the other half smooth OEM. Then you can for sure see the difference, and measure it.
