New computer backup or?

In the past you got an install disk.
Then you had the option of making DVD mirror backup of the system.
What's the right thing to do these days? Still DVD backup, or can you download from the Net now, or?
New in the box, might as well do the right thing first.
Dell, comes with Windows 7Pro, and W8 license....
