And alfalfa. You can tell how many rock chucks live in a rock pile by how far out the alfalfa is mowed right to the ground. A good dozen or so can easily eat 100' or more out into a field. They are fun to thin out with varmint rifle though.

As to the original question, the Belding squirrels here run from Feb-June, although by June it is tough to see them in fields. March-May, if you get into a field that has a lot of them (which is really easy to find in some areas) you can shoot 1,000+ rounds in a day. Guys who are serious about it will bring multiple rifles so as to be able to allow barrels to cool down. They don't like our lake bottom ground, but fields around the edge of the valley, you can shoot all day without leaving a pivot.
