No root canal. The tooth is healthy just had a botched filling, a second botched filling and the third was a case of "let's get a crown".
What he is saying is that once the root is out the clock starts till the tooth fails.
Been there myself a few times .You said yourself you have bad teeth. But you cant call a tooth with a rotten foundation a good place to expect a patch to make it like new again. it is a crappy tooth. I have had a full mouth of those. Fillings aren't forever either, only long enough until the tooth under it fails more over time, same with canals and crowns. its just like patching a car tire. Sooner or later that tire is going to get rottener, worn or punctured and fail again, hence another patch or it not worth fixing anymore.
