I know my kids had a lot of homework all the time.   When I was in HS, I got a lot of homework done in study hall, but it seems now days kids have more classes, so no study hall.    Now in college, I know I pretty much had anywhere from 1/2 hour to an hour of studying to do every night.

My daughter is a HS science teacher, teaching chemistry, biology, botany, anatomy, and earth science.   She gives them homework because she says there isn't enough time in class to cover everything.
