Penn Yan, NY | We planted ARG with clover (the standard forage in most of Germany) on a couple of fields that have been historically too wet to grow row crops on and it did incredibly well for the first 2 years, after that we plowed and planted corn which ran about 150 bpa. Where I worked in Germany they usually hit it with a disc and then a week later moldboard plowed and it was never a problem coming back.
It is really and underutilized forage because it can grow at such low temperature and can produce very high sugar levels. I haven't had a chance yet but I want to try notilling in about 40-50 lbs/ac of ARG into a fading alfalfa seeding in the early fall and see what grows the next year. Producing seed from in has been relatively easy for us so I consider it to be a low cost high value forage crop. | |
