We've had one for 20 years, 12' high and is covered with wood.   It's absolutely the first thing people see when they get to that part of the house.  I sure recommend them, gives a whole different feeling to the room, the wood makes it feel warm, and the height makes it feel less restrictive.

Also, a ceiling fan keeps the heat moving, so it's really not as much of a factor.   The warm air won't just sit up there.
