Subject: Re: Silage yield monitors?

I will be very interested to see how this technology develops. We approached the problem in the late 90's. Biggest issue to overcome was trying to measure the dry matter in real time. We came up with a prototype system whereby we could count small square hay bales and log thier position. After manually weighing a representative sample over the field we could come up with a rudimentary "hay yield map". We attempted to apply this methodology to silage but stalled when we could not measure the moisture content of the silage in real time and therefor could not determine dry matter. We even thought the place for the "hay yield monitor" may be on the mower or haybine instead of the chopper.

In any case we weren't able to move forward because of the "dry matter" vs. "wet matter" issue.

Cheers
