I always loved the song Signs. It was an early education for me on how someone's looks meant almost nothing. Someone's looks (including mine) can change in an instant. I try to not let them change the way I treat someone, precisely because I see all the time how looks change how I'm treated. If I go shopping in the city in work clothes I'm almost invisible to many people. Change to something sharp and shave (or not) and suddenly I'm tall, strongly built, with a look of tanned adventure (or something?) instead of a farmer tan and catch lots of looks. I'm just the same old me, so I try to value the attention of folks who appreciate the scruffy me. All the other folks are seeing is just a change of laundry. |
