Subject: RE: Tile plow control system pricing?

On our early system, we did not have a receiver in the cab. It was just mounted on the tile plow. It has arrows with bright lights that tell you to go up or down and then an inch wide solid green bar in the middle if it is on grade. If you get off grade just a little bit, the arrows will blink just a little to give you time to correct. If you get off grade too far, they blink real fast and you may want to restart or if you are too high, then just reset your receiver and continue from that point. Since the receiver was magnetic, we just had an angle iron mounted vertically above the front tip of the plow and then we could move the receiver wherever we needed to in order to line up to the laser. The laser could be set real sensitive or real loose. It has a 1 inch machine mode (do not use that) 0.4 inch machine mode and 0.2 inch grade rod mode. Depending on your soil type, the 0.2 may work, but if your plow keeps hunting, you may have to use the 0.4. On short runs it should work just fine, but realize that on longer runs you may not have the full capacity of your tile. Further, your tile may end up with some water sitting in it and part of it may fill with dirt eventually. Also realize that the tractor driver has to be really careful to tip the plow just enough to compensate without going too far. Try it out on test runs without tile to get the feel of it. Realize it will be quite stressful because you know that if you do not watch close enough or if you do not pull the lever quick enough or pull it too far, your grade will be off and you will have to stop and go back to where your grade was still on target and restart from that point. Let me say that you can make it work, but it sure ain't Intellislope. It would be way less stressful to have an automatic laser valve if you can afford it. This early laser method is quite similar to following a string and does work, it is just that it is only as good as your best setting and how close you can manually hold the grade. Realize if you get off grade and keep going that you could have just thrown away some tile or even worse, you might end up with a new wet spot where one had not been before. Fortunately what we put in back then has worked fine, but realize you have to be on your toes any time you put in tile and you really have to be on your toes if you use this low tech method.
